Why Don't We Charge by Time?

Most dog walking companies sell 15-minute, 30-minute, or 60-minute walks. We don’t. Here’s why: the clock doesn’t tell you anything about whether your dog got what they actually needed.

A 25-minute decompression walk where your dog is sniffing and regulating is completely different from a 25-minute enrichment walk where they’re exploring new terrain. Same time. Totally different purpose. We’d rather match the walk to the dog than watch the clock.

Your dog’s unconditional love doesn’t run on a timer. Neither do we.

Saving Fido - Capitol Hill - Why We Don't Charge by Time
Saving Fido Dog Walking Capitol Hill, Washington, DC - Why Three Walk Types

Why Three Walk Types?

Because not every dog needs the same walk. Your neighbor’s golden retriever who needs to burn energy? That’s an enrichment walk. Your pup who gets overwhelmed by the world? Decompression walk. Your easy-going lab who just needs daily movement? Standard walk.

We don’t sell one-size-fits-all service. We offer enrichment, decompression, and standard walks because every dog’s needs are different. Every Saving Fido client gets matched to the right walk type for their dog. And it can change over time as your dog’s needs evolve.

This isn’t a menu. It’s a match.

Frequently Asked Questions

UNDERSTANDING THE WALK TYPES

What are the three types of dog walks Saving Fido offers?

Saving Fido offers three walk types: Enrichment, Decompression, and Standard. Enrichment walks focus on mental stimulation through new routes, varied terrain, and exploration. Decompression walks are slow, sniff-heavy, and dog-led, designed to help dogs settle and reset. Standard walks provide reliable daily exercise with a consistent route and routine. Every walk is a private, one-on-one session. The difference between walk types isn’t the time — it’s the purpose.

What is an enrichment walk for dogs?

An enrichment walk is a dog walk focused on mental stimulation. Instead of the same route every day, we explore new streets, varied terrain, and natural environments that give your dog’s brain real work to do. Dogs who benefit most are high-energy, curious, or under-stimulated pups who need more than physical exercise. Think of it as a field trip for their brain. They come home tired in the best way possible.

What is a decompression walk for dogs?

A decompression walk is a slow, sniff-heavy walk where your dog sets the pace. We follow their lead. There’s no rushing, no tight leash, no set route. The goal is to let your dog process their environment at their own speed and come home feeling settled and calm. Dogs who need decompression walks are often overstimulated or stressed, and need space to breathe. It’s less about distance and more about giving your dog room to just be a dog.

What is a standard dog walk?

A standard walk is your dog’s reliable daily routine. Consistent, well-paced, and focused on solid movement, fresh air, and a dependable rhythm they can count on. Same walker, familiar route, structured exercise. It’s not flashy — it’s exactly what a lot of dogs need most, done right, every single time.

How do I know which walk type my dog needs?

We’ll figure it out together. When you sign up, you’ll choose your dog’s walk type based on their energy, temperament, and daily needs. Not sure where to start? Standard is a great default for most dogs. If you’d like a little guidance first, book a complimentary meet-and-greet and we’ll talk through what fits your pup best. Walk types aren’t permanent — they can change as your dog’s needs evolve.

Are the walk types different prices or lengths?

Nope. All walks are private, one-on-one sessions roughly 20 to 30 minutes in length. The difference isn’t the time or the price — it’s the purpose. An enrichment walk and a decompression walk can be the same length and still be completely different experiences for your dog. We match the walk to what your dog actually needs, not what the clock says.

Can my dog’s walk type change over time?

Absolutely. Dogs change. What your pup needs at six months is probably different from what they need at two years. We pay attention to how your dog responds on their walks and flag it when we think a change might help. You can also reach out anytime to adjust. This isn’t a locked-in subscription — it’s a service built around your dog’s actual life.

HOW IT WORKS AND GETTING STARTED

How do I sign up for dog walking with Saving Fido?

Signing up is straightforward. You create a profile in our client portal, choose your dog’s walk type, and schedule your first walk. No required intake call. No mandatory meet-and-greet. You can get started entirely on your own. If you’d prefer to connect first, we offer a complimentary meet-and-greet — just reach out and we’ll set one up.

Do I have to do a meet-and-greet before the first walk?

No, a meet-and-greet is not required. You can sign up and get started through our client portal without one. That said, if you’d like to meet your walker, have your dog get comfortable with a new person, or talk through which walk type fits best, we offer a complimentary meet-and-greet. It’s available whenever you want it — just not required. Book a complimentary meet-and-greet.

What information do I need to provide when I sign up?

When you create your profile, you’ll share the basics: your dog’s name, age, breed, any health considerations, vaccination records, and your preferred walk type. You’ll also set up payment through our secure client portal and provide key access information. The whole setup takes just a few minutes, and we’ll follow up if we have any questions before your first walk.

Is Saving Fido accepting new clients right now?

Reach out to check current availability. We serve Capitol Hill exclusively and keep our client roster intentional so every dog gets consistent, quality care. If we’re at capacity, we’ll let you know right away and can add you to a waitlist.

SAFETY, TRAINING, AND QUALIFICATIONS

Is Saving Fido insured?

Yes. Saving Fido carries general liability insurance. Proof of coverage is available upon request. We take the safety and well-being of every dog in our care seriously, and insurance is part of how we back that up.

Are your dog walkers trained?

Yes. Every Saving Fido walker is trained in positive reinforcement techniques, leash handling skills, and dog body language. At Saving Fido, every walker is coached in the way you handle a dog on a walk — because it matters. A lot. We don’t put anyone on a leash until they understand how to read a dog, manage a walk safely, and handle the unexpected. No aversive methods, no dominance-based handling — ever.

Does Saving Fido use positive reinforcement?

Yes, exclusively. Saving Fido’s philosophy is rooted in positive reinforcement training, and that runs through everything we do. Our walkers are coached on reward-based handling, reading dog body language, and supporting dogs without punishment, corrections, or aversive methods. If your dog needs extra patience on a walk, that’s what they’ll get. Learn more about Saving Fido.

How does Saving Fido keep my dog safe on walks?

Safety is the foundation of every walk we do. Our walkers are trained in secure leash handling, situational awareness, and emergency protocols. Every Saving Fido walker knows the nearest emergency vet, carries your contact information and your dog’s health details, and double-checks every door and gate. If conditions aren’t safe — whether that’s weather, a dog’s behavior on a given day, or anything else — we adjust the plan and let you know immediately.

What happens if my dog has a behavioral incident on a walk?

If something happens on a walk, you’ll hear about it right away. We don’t sugarcoat walk reports. If your dog reacted to another dog, had a rough moment, or something felt off, we’ll tell you what happened, what we did, and what we’re thinking for next time. If we feel a walk type adjustment would help, we’ll suggest it. If a dog’s behavior puts the walker or other dogs at risk, we’ll have an honest conversation about next steps.

Do you walk dogs in bad weather?

Light rain? We walk. We’re not afraid of a little weather. But when conditions are genuinely unsafe — dangerous heat, ice, severe storms, or poor air quality — we won’t walk. Your dog’s comfort and safety always come first. We’ll notify you as early as possible when a walk needs to be cancelled or shortened due to weather, and you won’t be charged for weather cancellations on our end.

LOGISTICS AND POLICIES

Will my dog have the same walker every time?

That’s the goal, and it matters to us as much as it matters to you. Consistency builds trust — for your dog and for you. We assign a primary Saving Fido walker to your dog so they’re building a real relationship, not meeting a stranger every week. If your primary walker is ever unavailable, we’ll let you know and a trained Saving Fido walker will cover the walk.

How do I give Saving Fido access to my home?

You’ll provide two sets of keys or building access credentials before service begins. One set stays with your assigned walker and one is kept in a secure lockbox at your home. If your building uses key fobs or access codes, you’ll provide those too. All access information is stored securely in our client portal. If a key or fob stops working, we’ll contact you right away.

What is Saving Fido’s cancellation policy?

Dog walking services must be cancelled at least 24 hours before the scheduled walk through our client portal. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged the full service fee. Heads-up: texting your walker directly doesn’t count as a cancellation — all changes need to go through the portal so nothing falls through the cracks.

What if you can’t get into my home on the day of the walk?

If we arrive and can’t get in — a fob isn’t working, a code changed, the lockbox is stuck — we’ll call you immediately, then your emergency contact. If we can’t reach anyone and can’t get access within 10 minutes of your scheduled walk time, the visit is forfeited and the full fee applies. We know that’s frustrating, so we ask that you always make sure your access info is current in the portal. It saves everyone a bad day.

Do you require proof of my dog’s vaccinations?

Yes. All dogs in our care must be current on rabies, DHLPP, and Bordetella vaccinations, and have a current negative heartworm test. When you sign up, you’ll certify that your dog is up to date. We may request documentation at any point, so keep those records handy in your vet’s portal. This protects your dog, our walkers, and every other dog on Capitol Hill.

Does Saving Fido charge extra on holidays?

Yes. A $10 daily surcharge applies on major federal holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Holiday slots fill up fast, so we recommend booking early. A non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot.

COMMUNICATION AND WALK REPORTS

How will I know how my dog’s walk went?
After every walk, you’ll receive a walk report with photos and notes from your walker. We’ll tell you where you went, how your dog did, anything we noticed, and anything worth flagging. If something stood out — good or concerning — you’ll hear about it right away. No radio silence. No generic “great walk!” We give you the real update because you deserve to know how your dog’s day actually went.
What does a walk report include?
Every walk report includes photos of your dog during the walk, a note on how they did, the general route or area covered, and anything your walker noticed — behavior, energy level, appetite for treats, anything unusual. If your dog had a great sniff session on a new street or spotted a squirrel from 40 yards, you’ll probably hear about that too. We like to keep you in the loop on the good stuff, not just the logistics.
How do I communicate with Saving Fido if I have a question or concern?
All schedule changes and cancellations go through the client portal — that’s the fastest, most reliable way to reach us for logistics. For questions or concerns, you can reach out directly and we’ll get back to you promptly. If something feels off after a walk, let us know within 24 hours. We’d always rather hear about it and address it than have you wondering.

PRICING AND SERVICE AREA

How much does Saving Fido dog walking cost?

Walks start at $35. Pricing is based on how often your dog walks per week — clients who schedule three or more walks per week get the best rate. Sign up through the portal to put your dog’s plan together, or reach out and we’ll walk you through it. Sign up and get started.

Where does Saving Fido provide dog walking services?

We serve Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. exclusively. That focus is intentional. Keeping our service area tight means your dog gets consistent walkers who know the neighborhood, know the routes, and show up on time — every time. If you’re on Capitol Hill and looking for a walker, we’d love to meet your dog.

Why does Saving Fido only serve Capitol Hill?

Because doing one thing exceptionally well beats doing many things adequately. Serving Capitol Hill exclusively means our walkers know every block, every shortcut, every spot where your dog loves to sniff. It means we show up on time because we’re not driving across the city. And it means your dog builds a real relationship with a walker who’s genuinely part of your neighborhood — not just passing through it.

How is Saving Fido different from Rover or Wag?

Rover and Wag are marketplaces. They connect you with whoever is available. Saving Fido is a dedicated team. Your dog gets the same walker, on a consistent schedule, who knows your dog’s name, quirks, and favorite sniff spots. Our walkers are trained in positive reinforcement and dog body language. And we match the walk type to what your dog actually needs, not just what fits a time slot. There’s a real difference, and you’ll feel it.
