Our Favorite Capitol Hill Spots

Saving Fido is run by Tracy, a Capitol Hill resident of more than 25 years who can’t imagine calling anywhere else home. (Her dogs, Kobe and Maple, seem to agree, though they also believe every single person who walks by is secretly carrying treats, so their judgment isn’t exactly infallible.)

Walking dogs here is what we do every single day, in every season and every kind of weather, which means we’ve gotten to know this neighborhood the way a dog does: one corner, one shop, one friendly face at a time. We know which sidewalks hold the heat in July, which streets stay calm when the Hill gets loud, and which spots are worth a long, slow sniff. And we’ve gotten to know the people, the shop owners who keep a water bowl by the door, the folks who learn a dog’s name before they learn yours, the small local businesses that make this corner of D.C. feel less like a city and more like a small town that happens to sit a few blocks from the Capitol.

That community is a big part of why we love it here, and why Saving Fido walks on Capitol Hill and nowhere else. So we put together a few of our favorite spots, the businesses and vets we genuinely trust, the places we send our own clients, and the people who help make the Hill such a wonderful place to be a dog. If you’ve just moved to the neighborhood with a new pup, or you’re simply looking for good people who love animals as much as you do, this is a great place to start.

Kobe joined us in January. We meant to stop at one dog. He had other ideas.

Maple came that October. He’d have been perfectly content as an only child. He’s just never gotten the chance to find out.

District Vet Eastern Market

Maple and Kobe try to drag us through the door at District Vet every time we walk past, which tells you something. It’s an independent, neighborhood-rooted, warm veterinary practice right here on Capitol Hill, and when our clients ask where to take their dog, it’s one of the first names we mention.

Howl to the Chief

When you need the best dog treats, toys or just want to browse, Howl to the Chief is THE place to go on the Hill. This independent pet store on 8th Street, SE is stocked with genuinely good food and treats, and staffed by people who know Capitol Hill dogs by name. They even do local delivery. Exactly the kind of neighborhood spot we love recommending to dog parents.

Wine and Butter

Wine and Butter is a lovely coffee shop just off Lincoln Park. And as of Spring 2026, this dog-friendly favorite is now home to Le Petit Scoop, their own ice cream shop. Between the two businesses, they are exactly the kind of welcoming that makes the Hill feel like the home. We can pretty much guarantee that once your pup’s been, they’ll really want to go back!

Frager’s Hardware

Washington, DC’s oldest hardware store and a true Capitol Hill institution, Frager’s Hardware has been open since 1920. You’ll find everything you need for your next home improvement project, and a dog toys and treats section that means your pup is always welcome to come along.
